TikTok Ads vs Meta: How to Use a First $500 Test

Choose a paid channel around the creative you can produce, the offer you can support, and a test budget you can afford to lose.

Updated

With a first $500 advertising budget, choose one question you want the test to answer. Splitting the money across platforms, products, and several different offers can leave you with results that are difficult to interpret.

Our recommendation is to start with the platform where you can make credible creative and measure the purchase path. There is no source-grounded reason to promise that TikTok or Meta will be cheaper for every new dropshipping store.

The $500 here is an illustrative total media budget, not a platform minimum or a promise that it will produce enough purchases for a reliable conclusion. Product samples, creative production, and software costs are separate.

Compare the work you can actually produce

TikTok’s creative guidance recommends platform-native material, vertical framing, sound, and attention to the interface’s safe areas. It presents these as starting points to test, not guaranteed results. TikTok creative guidance.

Meta also offers short vertical video through Facebook and Instagram Reels. Its guidance discusses vertical creative, audio, and keeping key messages visible. Video production is therefore relevant to both choices. Meta Reels ads.

If you can show the real product solving a recognizable problem, build the test around that demonstration. If you only have an attractive mockup and an unverified claim, fix the material first. A different platform will not make the claim more reliable.

Make a conditional choice

Use the evidence you already have:

Your situationA reasonable starting decision
You regularly make TikTok-style demonstrations and can produce meaningful variationsConsider TikTok first, after checking the campaign’s budget requirements
You have relevant experience and usable creative for Facebook or InstagramConsider Meta first and test the placements you can support
You have no verified product footage, uncertain delivery, or a broken purchase pathSpend time fixing the offer before buying traffic

These are editorial decision rules. They are not a demographic shortcut or a claim that one platform converts a category better.

Existing experience reduces the amount of unfamiliar work in the test. It does not guarantee a profitable campaign.

Check the budget rules in the account

TikTok documents minimum budgets at campaign and ad-group level. Check the current requirements for your chosen setup before dividing a small total into many groups. TikTok budget requirements.

For either platform, inspect the active budget settings, schedule, billing currency, and spending controls before launch. A lifetime test allowance and a daily budget are different instructions.

Decide your maximum total loss in advance. Do not increase it simply because an interface recommends more spend or because you want to rescue an inconclusive result.

Test one offer with a few distinct explanations

Keep the product, destination, and delivered price consistent while comparing creative ideas. A demonstration, a use-case explanation, and a clear answer to a buyer objection are more informative than three nearly identical captions.

Check the landing page on a phone. The variant, price, and delivery wording should match the ad. Place a supported test order and verify the purchase event setup before relying on campaign reporting.

The AI store launch guide is useful even if the store was built manually: its acceptance checks apply to the customer journey.

Judge the result against order economics

Clicks and video views can help locate a problem, but they do not establish a profitable offer. Compare paid orders with the product, shipping, transaction, and advertising costs for the test. Keep cancellations and later refunds visible.

Use the store metrics guide for a consistent definition of what remains. Avoid treating two platforms’ attributed revenue totals as separate sales when reconciling store orders.

A few purchases may be encouraging without establishing a stable acquisition cost. An inconclusive test is a valid outcome. Record what you learned about the creative, page, or offer before deciding whether another test is justified.

Choose the platform that makes a disciplined first test feasible. The useful result is a better decision about the offer, not a universal winner between two ad networks.

Set the break-even acquisition cost with the product-pricing worksheet before comparing platforms. This keeps an attractive click price from hiding an order that loses money.
